We received a grant for the My Plate curriculum. The children have been doing activities that involve nutrition while they learn about the five food groups. Today, they made a tasting activity from one of the recipes in the curriculum. They made "Friendship Pocket Sandwiches." The children were given a piece of Pita pocket bread with a choice of ham or turkey, lettuce and/or spinach, and some shredded cheese. They then made their own pocket sandwiches. We sent the recipe home with the children today. We talked about the different food groups that were in their sandwiches: grain (pita pocket), protein (meat and cheese), vegetable (lettuce and spinach).
